Once a year, come February 14th the fairer sex of planet earth go crazy. They become hypnotized by the commercials that encourage erratic behaviour. Conjuring up images of Prince Charming coming to their rescue atop a majestic white stallion, in short it breeds ignorance.

Nobody is safe. I cannot even take a nice pleasant walk down the beach without finding myself nauseated by the population of love-sick adults whose actions resemble those of a pre-pubescent teen as they grope each other shamelessly in public without considering the innocent bystander.

Granted-this a rather cynical look at things, perhaps even bitter. But why shouldn't I be? As for it being categorized as a holiday-utter bullshit! The Oxford English Dictionary defines the word "holiday" as;

"A day free from work that one may spend at leisure, especially a day on which a custom or the law dictates a halting of general business activity to commemorate or celebrate a particular event."-when was the last your boss looked you in the eye and said: "Cupid has opened my eyes! Take the day off!"-Never!

So my query to you is, why put so much stock in a holiday that is nothing more than a savvy marketing ploy?

What about those who don't have anyone to shower with affection? Or those brave enough to proclaim their undying love for another-only to be rejected? How about those sans the capital required to buy their beloved the diamond ring that just so happens to be on "special"?

The reality of the matter is that they fall to the wayside-left feeling depressed and lonely because they have nobody to love"¦.Well no more! I propose that this Vile Valentines we celebrate anything YOU deem worthy of your adoration.

Make it a day of self-indulgence laden with decadence because the fairytale that Hallmark and American Swiss have shoved down your throat is well past its expiration date and has left a foul aftertaste in our mouths. Couple this with the inflated price tag and I have reason enough for me to deep-fry any cock-sucking Cherub foolish enough to cross my path.

By now you are surely questioning my mental health and wondering if this lunatic has a point. My point you ask? That in theory the "holiday" is a day of selfless acts but the fact of the matter is that corporations are the only ones who are truly in love this Valentine's Day"¦"¦.in love with the contents of your wallet!

Secretly it is a day of expectation around the world where couples gauge their counterpart's devotion to them by seeing how much legal tender they were willing to part with in honour of their love. Their expectations are merely pre-meditated resentments as they find that the cost attached to this, the purest of human emotions is well below market value.

I feel that Valentines Day is a fallacy celebrated only because it is a tune that husbands around the globe are expected to dance to or suffer the dire consequences-and we all know men can't dance and those that can tend to be of a more effeminate nature.

In closing I would to pose a question to you: Why should one day of the year dictate our actions? The sentiment and thought behind these loving gestures should not be a mere date on a calendar but rather the foundation on which we build our lives.
